NBL Round 7: Huskies hand first defeat to Nuggets

Nuggets (7-1) recorded its first loss in Dunedin on Thursday night. Hosts were defeated by fourth ranked Huskies (6-3) 93-84. It ended at the same time the seven-game winning streak of Nuggets. Huskies made 20-of-21 free shots (95.2 percent) during the game. The former international power forward Robert Loe (211-1991, college: St.Louis) fired a double-double by scoring 19 points and 16 rebounds for the winners. Australian guard Jarrad Weeks (183-1989) chipped in 24 points. American guard Jaquori McLaughlin (193-1998, college: UCSB, agency: Pensack Sports) produced 39 points (!!!) and 6 assists for lost side. Nuggets' coach rotated eleven players in this game, but that didn't help. Huskies have a solid series of three victories in a row. They moved-up to third place. Defending champion Nuggets still keep top position with one game lost. Huskies are looking forward to face Jets (#6) in Palmerston North in the next round. Nuggets will play at home against Hawks (#9) and are hoping to win this game.
Very important is a home loss of second ranked Rams (6-2) against fourth ranked Huskies (6-3) on Saturday night. Host Rams were defeated by Huskies in Christchurch 84-72. It ended at the same time the five-game winning streak of Rams. Worth to mention a great performance of the former international power forward Robert Loe (211-1991, college: St.Louis) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 13 points, 9 rebounds and 10 assists. Jarrad Weeks contributed with 19 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists for the winners. American guard Tevin Brown (196-1998, college: Murray St.) answered with 17 points and 4 assists for Rams. Huskies have a solid series of three victories in a row. They moved-up to third place. Rams at the other side keep the second position with two games lost. Huskies will play against Jets (#6) in Palmerston North in the next round. Rams will play on the road against Saints (#7) in Wellington and hope to get back on the winning track.
Bottom-ranked Giants managed to get a third victory on Sunday night. This time they won against seventh-ranked Hawks in Tamatea 94-78. It's especially surprising that the victory came too easily and 16-point difference suggests that Giants is in a good shape to leave the bottom place. It was a great evening for Kavion Pippen who led his team to a victory scoring 28 points and 5 assists (on 12-of-15 shooting from the field). At the losing side Ira Lee responded with a double-double by scoring 19 points and 11 rebounds. Hawks' coach tested eleven players seeing no chance for a win. Giants (3-6) moved-up to eighth place, which they share with defeated Hawks. Giants will meet higher ranked Bulls (#4) in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Hawks will play against Sharks (#5) in Southland and hope to secure a win.

Other games of round 7 were very predictable and ended without any surprises. Here they are:
Bulls defeated Airs in Pukekohe 78-71. Jets were beaten by Sharks at home 89-105. Sharks lost to Saints on the opponent's court 84-100.
The best stats of 7th round was 32 points and 9 rebounds by Thomas Vodanovich of Saints.

Airs - Bulls 71-78

There was no surprise in New Plymouth where 8th ranked Airs (2-6) were defeated by fourth ranked Bulls (5-3) 78-71 on Friday. It was a great evening for American guard Rickey McGill (188-1997, college: Iona) who led his team to a victory scoring 20 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. The former international forward Daniel Fotu (203-1999, college: St.Mary's, CA) helped adding 20 points. At the losing side American swingman Anthony Hilliard (195-1986, college: ECSU) responded with 19 points and 5 rebounds and forward Scott Telfer (196-1998) scored 17 points. Bulls maintains fourth place with 5-3 record. Airs lost third consecutive game. They dropped to the bottom position with six games lost. Bulls will meet at home Giants (#8) in the next round. Airs will play against the league's second-placed Rams and hope to secure a win.

Jets - Sharks 89-105

The game between closely ranked teams ended with fifth ranked Sharks' (4-5) road victory over 6th ranked Jets (3-5) 105-89 on Saturday. Sharks dominated down low during the game scoring 56 of its points in the paint compared to Jets' 34. They outrebounded Jets 43-26 including a 38-20 advantage in defensive rebounds. Sharks looked well-organized offensively handing out 29 assists comparing to just 14 passes made by Jets' players. It was a great evening for American guard Jeremy Kendle (186-1988, college: Bellarmine) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 20 points and 20 assists. The former international forward Brayden Inger (203-1999) helped adding 18 points and 11 rebounds (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field). Five Sharks players scored in double figures. At the losing side American guard Javion Blake (191-1997, college: Washburn, agency: Haylett Sports) responded with 29 points and 6 assists and the other American import guard Mustapha Heron (196-1997, college: St.John's) scored 19 points. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Sharks maintains fifth place with 4-5 record. Loser Jets keep the sixth position with five games lost. They share it with Saints. Sharks will meet at home Hawks (#9) in the next round. Jets will play against Huskies and hope to secure a win.

They looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists. It was a great evening for the former international forward Thomas Vodanovich (201-1994, college: JMU) who led his team to a victory scoring 32 points and 9 rebounds. American forward Isaiah Mucius (203-1999, college: Wake Forest) helped adding 20 points and 6 rebounds. At the losing side Australian forward Grant Anticevich (206-1999, college: California) responded with a double-double by scoring 28 points and 12 rebounds and Jamaican center Romaro Gill (218-1994, college: Seton Hall) produced a double-double by scoring 17 points and 17 rebounds (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field).
